Passing Your G2 Driver's Test
Taking and passing the G2 driver's test in Ontario is not difficult, as long as you're prepared. Here are a few basic things to keep in mind.
Ontario uses a graduated system of licencing, a three-step process. When you're 16, you can apply for a beginner's licence, or a G1. This allows you to drive with a licenced driver, with 4 years driving experience, in the car with you. After 12 months you'll take your first road test, although if you've attended an approved driving school, it can be taken after eight months.
If you pass the road test, you would obtain a G2 licence. After another 12 month period of safe driving, you'll be ready to take the road test and be awarded the G level licence as a fully-qualified driver.
Where To Take The G2 Driving Test
There are many DriveTest Centres located throughout the province. In Sarnia the centre is located at 1362 Lambton Mall Rd, Sarnia, ON N7S 5A1. Its hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Tests are offered in both English and French.
What's On The Test
The road test involves driving with an examiner in the car. You will need to demonstrate that you can safely and competently drive on the public roads. During the G2 road test, you'll demonstrate some basic driving skills such as parallel parking and changing lanes.
What Do You Need To Take The Test
You'll need to have a car to take the road skills test, and you'll need to have successfully completed the requirements of the G1 licence and have the licence with you. You have to call or book and schedule an appointment for the road test.
How To Prepare For The G2 Driving Test
The best way to prepare for the in-car test is to attend an approved driving school in Ontario. Qualified instructors will use both classroom teaching and behind-the-wheel instruction to guide you through all the skills and knowledge required to pass both G2 & G road tests. How Much Does It Cost
The cost of your G2 road test is included in the G1 licence Fee Package you paid for when you wrote your G1 test. If you do not pass the G2 test, the fee to re-take the exam is $53.75.
Conditions of G2 licences
After passing your G2 test you can drive without an experienced driver, on all Ontario roads at any time of day (in most cases).
You still must:
- Have a zero blood-alcohol level
- Have only as many passengers as there are seatbelts
- For the first six months, you can only have one passenger in your car who is under the age of 19 between midnight and 5:00 AM.
- After six months, you're allowed up to three passengers. This restriction doesn't apply if you have a fully-licenced driver with you or if the other passengers are your immediate family members.
