What You Can Expect in the G1 Driver's licence Test

Driving may seem like basic life skill, but there are some risks on the road. This is why there are many tests that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (OMT) requires a person to take to get a driver's licence. The most common test that people take is the G1, which will allow you to drive cars, vans, and small trucks. If it's the first time for you to take this test, here are a couple of things that you need to know.

The G1 Driver's licenceTest: What You Can Expect

You can book a G1 road online, at a test center, or by phone. The fee for the knowledge test is $159.75. Road test fees also need to be paid before you book the G1 road test appointment. Here are the two parts of the exam:

G1 Knowledge Test: The Written Exam

This part of the G1 test will test your vision and knowledge. When you're on the road, you need to recognize the many signs used on Canadian roads. If you've studied thoroughly, you'll do just fine in this part of the test.

Note that there isn't a set schedule for taking the written test, but it is best to get there an hour early before the test center opens to give you enough time to prepare, get your head right, and finish early or on time.

G1 Road Test: The Driving Exam

If this is your first time taking the exam, you'll need to be accompanied by a fully licenced driver with at least four years of driving experience at the Driver Examination Centre. Make sure to be there 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment to start all processing.

The examiner will explain what you're required to do on the test, but they won't be coaching you. Ask all the questions you need to before starting the exam.

They will also ask you basic questions, such as if you need glasses or contact lenses to see. If you have any health conditions that can affect you at any given moment, such as a heart condition or diabetes, they will take note of it as well. This won't necessarily disqualify you from driving since plenty of people can drive under these conditions. It's just important for the examiner to note down, so don't lie.

Conclusion

Getting your driver's licence is an exciting milestone in your life once you get through all the tests. Just make sure that you're in the right headspace to push through with it. The exam has both written and practical parts, so you need to be calm and confident. Some people fail because of overthinking and nervousness. If you don't pass the first time, that's okay! There will be another chance for you to pass it when you're ready.
